Google Drive is the American tech giant’s internet storage solution that is incredibly popular. Thus, available on both desktops, smartphones, and tablets, the software allows users to synchronize files, photos and more between devices. Hence, anyone that uses Google Drive gets 15GB of free storage for content.
Google Drive has a problem. But, not so much in terms of functionality and features. But, rather the abuse of one of its features that have resulted in what many consider to be spam. A report from How-To-Geek revealed that Google Drive has a spam problem. Hence, anyone can share files and documents with you as long as they have your email address.
When this happens, files will automatically appear in your Drive account. Also, the other problem is that these files cannot be fully removed either. And at most you can hide it but it will still show up if you search for it. Therefore, thankfully Google is aware of the issue. And in a statement made to the publication, Google claims that they will be looking into it.
According to a statement made by a spokesperson. “For the vast majority of users, the default sharing permissions in Drive work as intended. Unfortunately, this was not the case for this user and we sincerely apologize for her experience. In light of this issue. Hence, we are evaluating changes to our spam, abuse. Also, blocking features that will prevent this kind of activity from taking place on Drive.”
While Google promised alterations are incoming, it discussed how users can best avoid certain files in the software in its current form.
The Mountain View company went on: “In the interim, users who are experiencing similar issues can remove themselves from the folder, and the folder should not reappear in either ‘My Drive’ or ‘Shared with Me’ unless they revisit it.”
Unfortunately, no release date was given for the permission changes discussed by Google.
You’ll Be Amazed On How Much You Saved Money From Electric Bill By These Hacks
Decreasing the amount of energy you expend at home isn’t just good for the environment. Hence, it can be good for your bank account, too.
According to a study from SaveOnEnergy. Thus, the average American spends a whopping $1,460 a year on electricity and $421 on natural gas; numbers that are expected to rise by 2 percent in 2018.
Luckily, there are plenty of simple ways to reduce your daily energy use. SaveOnEnergy assessed several energy saving hacks.
You will be amazed on much you really can save every year. And the likelihood that you will actually take advantage of them—and the results might surprise you.
Replacing Light Bulbs
According to SaveOnEnergy’s research. Hence, simply replacing all of the incandescent light bulbs in your home with energy-saving ones. Thus, like LED bulbs, Therefore you can save you an astonishing $180 a year.
Even more shocking to learn is that despite this statistic. Hence, only 50.2% of Americans will actually switch their bulbs. Thus, mostly 25-34 year old females living in the northeast and western parts of the U.S.).
Washing In Cold Water
Turns out washing your clothes in cold water can do more than extend the life of some your clothes, it can save you some moolah too!
SaveOnEnergy’s study estimates that hot water washes can cost you up to $60 a year—that’s an extra 5 bucks a month you’re wasting unnecessarily on energy.
Sealing And Insulating Windows
Of all the energy-saving measures you can incorporate into your home, it seems sealing and insulating your windows (with caulk or window film) to prevent outside air from coming in—and air conditioned air from going out—is the most cost-effective home improvement you can make.
According to SaveOnEnergy’s study, you can save up to $200 annually by closing off the seams inside your house. Too bad only 32.5% of Americans will make the effort to reap these rewards.
Shutting Down The Computer
Believe it or not, your home computers—no matter how small—are still a major energy drain. SaveOnEnergy estimates that you can save about $75 a year by turning off your desktop computers at night, instead of leaving it only idle.
What’s more, one laptop left on sleep mode can cost you $15 a year. No wonder one in every three people makes a point to shut off their computers when they’re not in use.
Xbox Live Down, Temporarily Broke The Always Connected Game Console Concept
When Microsoft first pitched the Xbox One to gamers, it sold them the idea of an always-connected game console. Now, the console’s dedication to its online services are causing problems. After Core Xbox Live Services failed earlier today. Hence, thousands of Xbox One consoles failed to boot up. Therefore, leaving hapless gamers staring at what looked like an foreboding black screen of death.
The good news? Those consoles weren’t actually dead — they just froze up when they failed to sign into Xbox Live. Unfortunately, that means those same consoles had to live in a state of limbo. Thus, until Microsoft got Xbox Live back up and running. Microsoft says it’s working on it, writing on Twitter that its engineers have identified the cause.
Some gamers were alarmed and initially worried that their console hardware might be broken. But it was purely an Xbox Live and software issue. Thus, a bad one that basically made the Xbox One unusable for a couple of hours.
While the problem was still happening, some reported that unplugging from ethernet can start up the console normally since it wasn’t making any connection to Live. But consoles set up for a Wi-Fi network couldn’t use that workaround. Fortunately, the company pinpointed the problem shortly after trouble began and got to resolving it:
The Major Flaw Of Always Online Consoles
But the situation is another reminder of how deeply woven into Xbox hardware the online service is. If the whole system can go haywire when something’s wrong with Xbox Live. Thus, maybe that link is a little too direct. Xbox chief Phil Spencer has previously acknowledged that some aspects of the Xbox. Hence, are too dependent upon Microsoft’s services running smoothly at all times.
Microsoft’s relatively quick fix for the outage is reassuring. But it does raise some questions about how the Xbox One will fare in the future. Historically, consoles eventually see their online services shuttered, which effects them in various ways. The original Xbox lost access to online services years ago, and just this week, Nintendo shuttered the original Wii Shop. If anything, today’s incident shows that the Xbox One might not be ready for a disconnected future.
4 New Interesting Smart Home Products to Put on Your List for Early 2019
January is not only the time people make new goals and resolutions, it is also the month for high-tech companies to roll out their greatest releases for their consumer products. Recently, smart home products are on the rise. There are plenty products to anticipate this year, but here are some of the most interesting smart home products you can put on your wish list and finally buy this year.
A cocktail making robot
Literally, this Elliis not a robot, or shaped like a robot, but still essentially an automatic machine that makes cocktail. This smart home device works like a Keurig, but for people who drink alcohols instead of coffee. You just insert a mixer capsule into the machine then select the strength of the cocktail and wait a few seconds for your drink to be ready. Very practical, right? If you are not the alcohol-lover type, you can remove the alcohol and get a mocktail instead.
A laundry folding machine
What is one of the most boring, time-consuming home chores dreaded by many people? Probably folding the laundry. But this year, a smart home product might save you from doing this uninteresting work. FoldiMate will help you fold your laundry. All you have to do is inserting a clothing item into the machine and it will be returned fully-folded.
Portable home air filter
The Ecovacs Atmobot is a hybrid device, a mix between a robot vacuum and an air filter, and is truly portable and automatic. The smart home product can seamlessly navigate around your home to take measurement of your air quality. If it detects that the quality is lower than it should be, it will cleverly filter the air. The Atmobot has laser distance sensors so it can map out your home for better navigation.
A voice-controlled fragrance dispenser
A fragrance dispenser is one of the oldest home products that is vital for many people. But this year, this item just gets smarter. Procter & Gamble’s Airia help you freshen your home with your voice. The cartridge can even keep up to four different scents at once!
The HQ Trivia And Vine Co-Founder, Colin Kroll, Found Dead Of Suspected Overdose
Colin Kroll, the 35-year-old co-founder and CEO of the HQ Trivia app. Hence, has been found dead of an apparent drug overdose in his apartment, TechCrunch has confirmed.
A spokesman for the NYPD told us that a female called 911 for a wellness check on Kroll’s apartment. Hence , he was found dead inside at 08:00 hours today.
The police department said the investigation is ongoing but added that the cause of death is “allegedly a drug overdose”.
“We’re still waiting on the ME’s report to confirm that,” he added.
In a brief statement, HQ said: “We learned today of the passing of our friend and founder, Colin Kroll. And it’s with deep sadness that we say goodbye. Our thoughts go out to his family, friends and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”
Kroll was only named CEO of the HQ Trivia mobile game show app three months ago. Thus, replacing fellow co-founder Rus Yusupov who moved over to serve as chief creative officer.
Prior to taking the CEO role Kroll served as HQ’s CTO. He co-founded the startup in 2015, a few months after moving on from Vine. Hence, the Twitter-owned short video format startup which got closed down in 2017.
It’s not clear who will take over the CEO role for HQ Trivia at this stage. But Yusupov looks a likely candidate, at least in the interim.
The Man Behind The App
In recent months the startup has been beta testing a follow up mobile game show, called HQ Words. Its original trivia format show airs twice per day. And awards winners as much as $100,000 for successfully answering 12 questions.
The app debuted last August and was a viral success. But the question hanging over HQ Trivia and its co-founders has increasingly been how to sustain an early winning streak. Hence, once the novelty of the original show ran its course.
As we reported previously, HQ Trivia’s ranking in the app store has been steadily decreasing in recent months.
Kroll started his career as a software engineer at Right Media. Thus, went on to be acquired by Yahoo in 2006. From then until 2011, he led the engineering team in Yahoo’s search and advertising tech group. Before joining luxury travel site Jetsetter as VP of Product. Hence, he went on to be promoted to CTO.
In 2012 he left to start Vine with co-founders Dominik Hofmann and Yusopov.
Top 5 Tips On How To Choose New Smartphones
Buying new phones are pretty confusing. And they’re very expensive too, so you definitely want to feel confident when you make your purchase. Hence, All the makes, the different models, and the pricing tiers, also the contracts and constant marketing. Therefore, choosing a new blower both confusing and daunting in equal parts.
By the end, you will hopefully have a clearer view of what phone you want and why. Just be open-minded going into this; don’t be afraid of potentially getting a phone that isn’t made by Apple.
People usually spend hours each day staring at their smartphone screen. Therefore, you need to make sure that your new phone is bright enough to see outdoors, and sharp enough where the text doesn’t look blurry while you’re surfing the web.
If you’re buying a phone with a large screen, don’t go under a resolution of 1920 x 1080p and, if you can splurge, look for the sharper 2560 x 1440 Quad HD resolutions. Consider the screen size, too. Can you easily reach across it? Do you want a larger screen for movies or a smaller one that’s easier to hold and less likely to drop out of your hands?
If you like sharing pictures with friends and family, make sure you’re buying a phone with a good camera. Most of the more expensive phones (the Galaxy S9 and the iPhone X) are particularly adept at taking pictures in low light, too, which means you’ll still get good pictures in a dim restaurant without the flash. Budget phones don’t usually have great cameras, so consider spending a bit more if this is important to you.
I know plenty of folks try to save money by buying cheaper phones, but often they ship without much storage on board. I recommend buying a smartphone with at least 64GB of storage, or more if you plan to download music and movies. Apps are much bigger these days, and pictures can take a lot of space if you’re not storing them in the cloud (Apple Photos, Google Photos, or other services offer these options. Some Android smartphones also offer “microSD” card slots that allow you to boost the storage space.
Read reviews or talk to people who already own the phone you’re interested in buying. You want one that’s going to last all day, if possible. The biggest complaint I get from friends and family is that their smartphones are “always dead.” If you’re in this bunch, consider a smartphone with a fast charging battery. Most Android smartphone makers include the special chargers that can juice up a battery to at least a half charge in just minutes. Or, if you own an iPhone, consider buying an iPad charger to get more juice.
The company’s reputation
If you can, do a bit of research on the company that makes the smartphone. Apple, Samsung, LG, and most other household names are safe bets. Others, like Blu, Huawei, and OnePlus, which often sell more “affordable” flagship smartphones, have come under fire for various reasons. U.S. intelligence agencies advise against buying smartphones from Huawei, for example, while Blu and OnePlus have been caught sending private data back to headquarters.
Top 5 High Likely New Features On Playstation 5
While we don’t know when the PS5 release date will be announced. Recent reports suggest that 2019 will be the year. But we do know that Sony Interactive Entertainment is making a next-gen console and that it will likely be called the PS5. Should be arriving in the next couple of years.
The latest from Sony is that they need to develop next-gen hardware. Only going as far as to say that there will be a PS5 to follow the PS4 and Xbox One.
it hasn’t officially revealed or announced anything. But that hasn’t stopped details from leaking and surfacing unintentionally. In fact, we already know of a handful of features that appear like they will be shipping with the PS5 whenever it releases. And we also know of some abstract details about what Sony is going to potentially do with the system.
So, without further ado, here are four features the PS5 will likely have.
Another new patent that recently surfaced suggests that the PS5 will come with V-Sync support. In short, this means that games will run better on the system, with smoother combat and less screen tearing. This happens because V-Sync aids the game’s frame to your display’s refresh rate. So, if you’re playing a 60FPS game on 60HZ display, V-Sync will intercept the frequencies and make sure the game never crosses 60FPS and causes tearing and other issues.
Big Overhaul Changes On PSN
We are already starting to see Sony make big changes to PSN in the form of download speeds, and most recently finally allowing for name changes. It would be pretty surprising if Sony didn’t carry this momentum into the PS5, especially when you consider the direction of gaming is heading more and more towards a digital and streaming future.
That said, current rumors and reports suggest that Sony isn’t resting on its laurels, and is actually getting ready to roll out huge PSN changes in time for the PS5.
A recent patent filed by Sony Interactive Entertainment seems to suggest that the PS5 will not only be backwards compatible with the PS4, but with the PS3, PS2, and even the PS1. And given Microsoft’s continual push and advancement in this area, it’s no surprise Sony is looking to bring its tremendous legacy forward with it and to compete with its biggest competition.
Okay, so this one is a bit of a no-brainer, but it isn’t always clear what type of graphical boost a console generation will yield. However, Epic Games, creator of the Unreal Engine, have been out touting what the future of graphics looks like, and the tech it has shown off boasts uncanny realism — the type of realism we are already starting to see late this generation.
New Type Of Blu-Ray Disc
Sony has revealed new BD-XL discs, which are scheduled to release next month, that can store up to 128GB of data. Given the rising file sizes of games recently — we’re looking at you Red Dead Redemption 2 — it wouldn’t be surprising that the PS5 would set itself up to deal with the increase in download sizes for games. Our all-digital future is close, but it isn’t here yet.
The New Kindle Paperwhite Now Waterproof!
Amazon has introduced the all-new Kindle Paperwhite, it came with a lighter design and water-proof starting from $129.99 for 8gb with ads. The Kindle Paperwhite is a front-lit Kindle e-book reader that offers improved contrast and enables users to easily read in the dark compared to older backlit Kindle devices.
The new Paperwhite incorporates some of the best features from the more expensive Kindle Oasis and Kindle Voyage. While the e-ink screen is the same resolution as the previous model (300 ppi), its display now sits flush with its edges, which means there’s no longer a little edge to catch sand and crumbs.
At a millimeter thinner, the new Paperwhite is now 23 grams lighter than the previous model. The new model has an additional built-in LED light to improve lighting uniformity. It’s bath- and pool-friendly, with an IPX8 waterproof-ness rating. Which means it can survive immersion in up to 2 meters of fresh water for up to an hour. There’s also double the storage — 8GB — which can fit thousands of books, magazines, and whatever else you’re reading.
Amazon really wants you to read on Kindle too. It’s why the company has always built Kindles with six weeks of battery life on a single charge. So, you have no excuse not to read stuff on it. It’s why the company is giving six months of Kindle Unlimited, its $10 per month subscription. Along with the $130 Paperwhite. It’s why you can now add presets for certain formats and save them to Kindle, like a “Gym” preset with giant text, so you can read even when you’re on the treadmill.
The Kindle is still aspirational. It makes you want to read. It’s a relic from a time when not all flights had Wi-Fi. When vacations weren’t interrupted by constant work flutterings when nighttime routines didn’t involve swiping at notifications.
All of which makes it that much more comforting that it doesn’t have Alexa.
Top 5 Brand New Feature And Improvement On iPhone XS And XS Max
Apple has announced a new iPhone on the market. iPhone XS and XS Max. As the name implies, it’s something of an upgrade to the iPhone X. You’ll find the same overall design and major features, with a handful of big improvements.
That doesn’t mean it’s a bore. Quite the contrary: For those who found last year’s iPhone X just a little too expensive for what you get, this year’s improvements might be enough to win you over. Here’s everything you need to know about the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max.
Brand New A12 Bionic Processor
The A11 Bionic in the iPhone X and iPhone 8 was the fastest mobile processor on the planet when it was introduced last year. It was so fast, it still outpaces the latest high-end Android phones. With the A12 Bionic, Apple has upped the ante.
Made using advanced 7-nanometer manufacturing technology, Apple claims the high-performance cores on the A12 are up to 15 percent faster than the A11 Bionic while using up to 40 percent less power. The high-efficiency cores use up to 50 percent less power. And GPU performance is up to 50 percent faster.
Those improvements pale in comparison to the seriously beefed-up Neural Engine (for machine learning tasks). It is now capable of a whopping five trillion operations per second, up from 600 billion in the A11.
With last year’s iPhone X, you could have any sized display you wanted, provided it was exactly 5.8 inches. This year, Apple has recognized that variety is the spice of life and that some people want a lot of screen real estate on their smartphone. The 5.8-inch size is back with the iPhone XS, but you can also go big with either the 6.1-inch iPhone XR or the 6.5-inch iPhone XS Max.
The new phones support something called Smart HDR, which increases the number of exposures captured when you take a photo. That means more balanced shots, and since Smart HDR does this more quickly than before, you shouldn’t notice any shutter lag when you’re taking pictures.
The dual lens set-up on the iPhone XS and XS Max is the same as what the original iPhone X offered (a 12-megapixel wide-angle lens plus a 12-MP telephoto shooter), but Apple says the sensor is larger on the new models, which should improve the quality of shots captured in low-light settings. We certainly noticed better images when we tested the new phones, though the Pixel 2 XL remains the current standard for camera phones.
Long Lasting Battery
The Previous iPhone is already outpacing the average smartphone on battery life. Apple says the new phones should last even longer. That wasn’t the case when we tested and retested the new phones, though the XS Max turned in a time of 10 hours, 38 minutes, which is better than the average smartphone. The iPhone XS’s result was a more ordinary 9 hours, 41 minutes. So if you want a phone that gets you through the day on a single charge, opt for the larger model.
Better Face ID
Face ID introduced last year with the iPhone X. The process isn’t changing with the new iPhones, which all adopt the X’s home button-free design. But you should be able to unlock your phone or confirm mobile payments faster. Apple says Face ID now has faster algorithms and a faster secure enclave to speed up the facial recognition process.
Top 4 Brand New Feature On Google Pixel 3
If you have last year’s Pixel phone and thinking about whether you need to upgrade your phone or not. There are several new features coming to the Pixel 2 that you might want to know before spending money on a new device.
The Pixel 3 and 3 XL will have a few exclusive features because they require specific hardware upgrades. For example, the new phones support wireless charging—and you can buy a slick-looking wireless charging stand to go with it. There’s also a second front-facing camera for capturing wider photos so you can get everyone in the group selfie.
Google Duplex will let Pixel 3 owners book tables at restaurants (if the restaurant doesn’t already support an online booking system like OpenTable); older Pixel phone owners getting the feature before the end of the year.
Unfortunately, there’s a catch. While Google isn’t restricting the feature to specific Pixel phones, it is restricting it to specific cities. If you live in Atlanta, New York, Phoenix, or the San Francisco Bay Area, you’ll be able to try out Duplex. If you’re outside of those cities, you’ll have to wait longer.
This feature lets Google Assistant answer your incoming phone calls for you and transcribe what the person on the other end of the phone is saying. You can then respond with a canned message—such as “tell me more” or “they’ll get back to you”—which Google Assistant will read out loud to the other person. You have the option of reporting a call as spam or, if the call seems interesting enough, answering it yourself.
Sorting Photos And Create New Albums
Google is rolling out a new feature that lets you create Live Albums that automatically fill with photos of the people Google recognizes. So, for example, since Google already recognizes your mother and father, you can create an album called Parents and add both their names to it. From then on, any picture you take of either of them will show up in the same album. This convenient feature is already rolling out right now for users on Android, iOS, and the web.
Night Sight To Lights Up Dark Photos
Low-light photos have been a consistent problem for years, despite lofty claims from smartphone manufacturers. While some previous solutions have aimed to make the best of a dark situation, Night Sight uses Google’s favorite two words—machine learning—to guess what the colors in a picture should be, and fill in the darker parts of the image.
