3 Creepy Facts About Artificial Intelligence That Will Scare You

Published

on

The fourth industrial revolution brings us the advancement in the robotic technology. It is predicted that the technological progress will accelerate at an exponential speed. Automated computer systems have delivered us artificial intelligence in multiple forms: from the self-driving car to virtual assistants to the software of supercomputers. It is predicted that some, even many, of us who live today will witness the day when the artificial intelligence surpasses the intelligence of mankind.

But, as many experts have warned us, the advancement of artificial intelligence is not free of risks. In fact, robots might someday threaten us as a human race. While there is no doubt that the future heavily depends on it, there are scary things you need to know about artificial intelligence.

Machines will replace us at the workplace

The goal of automation is that someday human beings do not have to work as much as we do now because robots will do the menial tasks and other stuff we do to survive. Because of this, the human being can have a lot of time to pursue their real interests and happiness (remember the post-scarcity society in Star Trek?). But, as long as the capital is accumulated in the hands of few, the interests of technological advancement will always lead to profits. And hiring robots to replace human workers is an extremely profitable move for employers. Since artificial intelligence is just going to keep getting smarter and more functional, human workers will be replaced by them. Transportation, storage, retail, and manufacturing sectors are going to be the first fields affected.

There is a monopoly in the AI market

While these years we have witnessed the bloom of startup and other smaller initiatives that participate in the STEM including robotic industry, the monopoly in the artificial intelligence market is very real. Bigger companies like Google, Facebook, Apple, and Samsung have been buying smaller companies at such an alarming rate. And why is this dangerous? Because we can be certain that these companies are competing to exploit as much profit as possible from humans with the rise of the artificial intelligence. Since the market is monopolized, it will be tough to find an alternative beyond the available options.

AI will exceed our intelligence and reasoning ability

Yes, it is “will”, not “can.” The artificial intelligence that has been around in our day-to-day lives is classified as weak. These programs only follow what they are told to do by the human programmer. But the strong AI that is predicted to start appearing in around ten years from now will have consciousness and reasoning ability like humans. Since AI has the nature of self-learning, they will keep getting smarter and smarter and there is no limit to that.

Xbox Live Down, Temporarily Broke The Always Connected Game Console Concept

Published

on

When Microsoft first pitched the Xbox One to gamers, it sold them the idea of an always-connected game console. Now, the console’s dedication to its online services are causing problems. After Core Xbox Live Services failed earlier today. Hence, thousands of Xbox One consoles failed to boot up. Therefore, leaving hapless gamers staring at what looked like an foreboding black screen of death.

(Source: gamespot)

The good news? Those consoles weren’t actually dead — they just froze up when they failed to sign into Xbox Live. Unfortunately, that means those same consoles had to live in a state of limbo. Thus, until Microsoft got Xbox Live back up and running. Microsoft says it’s working on it, writing on Twitter that its engineers have identified the cause.

Some gamers were alarmed and initially worried that their console hardware might be broken. But it was purely an Xbox Live and software issue. Thus, a bad one that basically made the Xbox One unusable for a couple of hours.

While the problem was still happening, some reported that unplugging from ethernet can start up the console normally since it wasn’t making any connection to Live. But consoles set up for a Wi-Fi network couldn’t use that workaround. Fortunately, the company pinpointed the problem shortly after trouble began and got to resolving it:

The Major Flaw Of Always Online Consoles

But the situation is another reminder of how deeply woven into Xbox hardware the online service is. If the whole system can go haywire when something’s wrong with Xbox Live. Thus, maybe that link is a little too direct. Xbox chief Phil Spencer has previously acknowledged that some aspects of the Xbox. Hence, are too dependent upon Microsoft’s services running smoothly at all times.

(Source: cnet)

Microsoft’s relatively quick fix for the outage is reassuring. But it does raise some questions about how the Xbox One will fare in the future. Historically, consoles eventually see their online services shuttered, which effects them in various ways. The original Xbox lost access to online services years ago, and just this week, Nintendo shuttered the original Wii Shop. If anything, today’s incident shows that the Xbox One might not be ready for a disconnected future.

Tumblr Will Purge Adult Content In December 17th

Published

on

Tumblr, the online blogging site owned by Verizon since its July 2016 acquisition of Yahoo, will ban adult content beginning Dec. 17, 2018. Hence, in a move that will eradicate porn-related communities on the platform and fundamentally alter how the service is used.

The Ban

(Source: independent)

The ban includes explicit sexual content and nudity with a few exceptions, the company tells The Verge. The new policy’s announcement comes just days after Tumblr was removed from Apple’s iOS App Store. Because of a child pornography incident, but it extends far beyond that matter alone. “Adult content will no longer be allowed here,” the company flatly stated in a blog post published on Monday.

(Source: Kasperskydaily)

Banned content includes photos, videos, and GIFs of human genitalia, female-presenting nipples, and any media involving sex acts, including illustrations. The exceptions include nude classical statues and political protests that feature nudity.

(Source: theoutline)

The new guidelines exclude text, so erotica remains permitted. Illustrations and art that feature nudity are still okay. Hence as long as sex acts aren’t depicted. And so are breastfeeding and after-birth photos.

What Happen After December 17th?

(Source: Mashable)

After December 17th, any explicit posts will be flagged and deleted by algorithms. For now, Tumblr is emailing users who have posted adult content flagged by algorithms. Also, notifying them that their content will soon be hidden from view.

Posts with porn content will be set to private. Which will prevent them from being reblogged or shared elsewhere in the Tumblr community.

(Source: Dinamo)

Users have a chance to appeal to Tumblr’s decision in situations where they think there’s been a mistake. Also, the platform admits there’s a chance that the automated tools it’s using could make errors.

It’s a process that could take a while, as a bulk of Tumblr posts feature explicit content. Users who run adult blogs can also export their content. Before the change takes place in order to save what they have.
